well my solution to recording and being nervous about it was to just start Audacity on my PC and let it play for 2.5 hours and hope for the best.  We'll see, I guess, how it works.

 

And a lot of it was stuff I didn't really know about, like more info about my grandma's Uncle Art who died a few days after D-Day in Normandy, and stuff.  I'm also going to probably be getting a lot of emails from my grandfather with family history: essays he wrote, but also transcripts of interviews and various other things...  I uh didn't mean to like sign up as the next gen genealogist/family historian but I guess as the one person in the family who deals with history, it makes sense...
